I think RA Fisher (who invented much of modern statistics and also was a paid consultant of the tobacco industry) actually tried to argue that these results might be due to cancer causing people to smoke. The fact that this is such a transparently bad argument shows how strong (if not perfect) this design is for this particular research question. It also shows that knowing statistics doesn’t protect you from motivated reasoning.
